With remarkable years come noteworthy events, as we at Varghese & Associates, P.C. can attest to.
#10 Prosecuting Karen – Amy Cooper and the Selective Prosecution of Yasmine Seweid
A video went viral of Amy Cooper, aka the “Central Park Karen,” screaming at a bird watcher that she was going to tell the police an “African-American man” was threatening her. Though she was clearly lying—at the time that the New York Law Journal published our op-ed—Amy Cooper hadn’t been charged with filing a false police report. In our op-ed, we contrasted the non-arrest of “Karen” with the arrest of Yasmine Seweid, who had also made a false police report, but had been prosecuted. Shortly after its publication, “Karen” was arrested. Click the thumbnail above to read the full op-ed!
#6 Is the New York State Bar Association Relevant?
About two months into the lockdowns, the New York State Bar Association suggested that people should be forced to take the coronavirus vaccine, which at the time of the op-ed was still months away from fruition.
Vinoo highlighted that while the Bar was all too willing to support forced vaccinations it failed to protect and advocate for criminal defense attorneys as “essential” when Governor Cuomo made his initial lockdown order. Their inaction contrasted sharply with their much smaller counterpart in New Jersey which successfully pushed Governor Murphy to designate all lawyers as “essential.” Thus, the New York State Bar Association is “no longer relevant.” Click the thumbnail above to read the full op-ed!

#3 To Ensure Justice for George Floyd, Derek Chauvin Must Get a Fair Trial (And We Must Recognize Keith Ellison’s Abuse of Prosecutorial Discretion)
During a time of strong racial tensions and what appeared to be mass loathing for the police officers involved with the death of George Floyd, Vinoo took a controversial stance and said for there to be any justice for Floyd, Derek Chauvin and the other officers involved must have a fair trial. He also went on to explain why Chauvin may be acquitted. Click the thumbnail above to read the full op-ed!
#2 Defense Attorneys are Essential Personnel: New Coronavirus Restrictions Fail to Protect Lawyers Who Serve the Accused
The COVID-19 lockdowns left tens of millions of Americans out of work after governors arbitrarily designated most businesses as non-“essential.” Almost every governor, except Cuomo, however, designated criminal defense attorneys as “essential.” Vinoo hammered Cuomo in this op-ed published by the New York Daily News. The next day, Cuomo declared criminal defense attorneys “essential.” Click the thumbnail above to read the full op-ed!
