Misdemeanors are a Big Deal – Legal Minute Episode 2
Many people are unaware of the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony so I’m here to clear it up.
Misdemeanors are actually a big deal. If you are charged with one it can lead to a permanent criminal record. The only difference is that a misdemeanor means you face up to a year in jail, while a felony carries a punishment of more than a year.
So when you hear someone say, “It’s only a misdemeanor,” put that in context. A misdemeanor isn’t a big deal if you’ve got a long rap sheet, but if you’ve never seen the inside of a jail cell, then you don’t want a misdemeanor on your record.
